Happy Friday! I recently found out the homeowners’ sink does sparkling water using the nubbin on the other side of the faucet from the regular water handle. I coulda been having fizzy water this whole time!

On Dreamwidth

dolorosa_12 shares a warning about AI scambots from AO3 infiltrating Dreamwidth.

beepbird has written a book about plurality/multiplicty titled “For the Many,” and it’s available for free download (EPUB/PDF) at the post, or on their website here.

Summary:

Plurality is the experience of having more than one self in the same body. There are few guides written for those who don’t fit into “one person per body”, and it can be hard to figure out how to live a life where you’re never alone, especially if you struggle with internal conflicts or trust issues. For the Many offers over 100 pages of guides on self-discovery, communication, and developing an internal community.

Crafts & Paper Stuff

This Tumblr post about how to find fabric for cosplay without JOANN stores is pretty useful and has good ideas for getting out there and finding stuff. (warning for a couple of bean soup moments in the comments) (via senmut)

Tech Stuff (Not AI)

A fun little game for people who think they understand email: Email is Easy

Anna from anna.kiwi wrote this sweet tribute to WordPress/Automattic, where she’s worked for the past 8 years.

Homestead the Web: “We don’t need to charge forth as heroes and topple giants. Because when the tech giants cut their connection to the web – with AI summaries and walled gardens – they freed us. There’s little point farming backlinks or bowing to their demands now. And in their wake of destruction I see space to grow.”

Elena Rossini put together this short video about the Fediverse (4:07 length, with captions & multiple language subtitles) called “Introducing the Fediverse: a New Era of Social Media“:

AI is Bullshit

(co-opting the title for now)

AI Is a Mass-Delusion Event:

Even if you personally don’t believe in the hype, you are living in an economy that has reoriented itself around AI. […] This is the AI era in a nutshell. Squint one way, and you can portray it as the saving grace of the world economy. Look at it more closely, and it’s a ticking time bomb lodged in the global financial system.

Author Robert Kingett posted about how one of his beta readers fed his draft to ChatGPT.

Emily Bender, one of the authors of The AI Con, presents some ideas for talking points to try and dissuade people from using AI, mostly people who aren’t deeply involved in tech/art side of things and so don’t necessarily know all the bad stuff associated with LLM AI/gen AI stuff.
